I will answer such questions.

Therefore, in this article, I will introduce the movie “Merry Christmas on the battlefield” starring Beat Takeshi.

Why is a war movie without battle “Merry Christmas on the Battlefield” a masterpiece?

Although it is a war movie, it does not depict any battle, and is a unique work that depicts the sexual love between men in an elegant way. I’m here.

In 1942, in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp on the island of Java, Captain Yonoi had absolute power. One day, Kanemoto, a Korean military employee, raped a Dutch soldier Yon. Sergeant Hara tries to force Kanemoto to commit seppuku, but Captain Yonoi shows up and makes the punishment lighter.

A new British army major, Celiaz, has arrived at the camp. Captain Yonoi is fascinated by Celiaz’s appearance, and he develops a feeling of love. Celiaz, who has become the leader of the camp’s prisoners, annoys Captain Yonoy with his rebellious demeanor.

There was a British Lieutenant Colonel Lawrence in the camp who could understand and speak Japanese. Lawrence was the big brother of the POWs in the camp, and even the Japanese soldiers respected him.

Celiaz and Lawrence are forced into solitary confinement by Captain Yonoy for possessing radios without permission. It was Christmas Day, and Celiaz and Lawrence were called to Halla. Halla is very drunk and yells “Farzell Christmas” and releases Celiaz and Lawrence. Halla identifies herself as Santa Claus and says this is a present.

Angered by Hara’s reaction, Captain Yonoi orders all the prisoners to gather. It also included the prisoners of war, which violated the Geneva Conventions. One prisoner fell and died. Captain Yonoi tried to cut the POW chief who was trying to protect him with his sword. Celiaz walked over and kissed Captain Yonoi. In an unexpected development, Captain Yonoi collapses.

Captain Yonoy was sacked, and the new captain sentenced Celiaz to be decapitated and buried alive. He died while Celiaz reminisced about his past.

The war is over. The Japanese army is defeated and Captain Yonoi is executed. On Christmas Day 1946, Lawrence visits Hara on the eve of her execution. Reminiscing about Christmas four years ago, the two of them laugh together. As Lawrence was about to leave, Halla stopped him and shouted, “Merry Christmas. Merry Christmas. Mr. Lawrence.”

This is the synopsis and ending of Movie Senjou no Merry Christmas.

“Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence” is handled by Ryuichi Sakamoto who played Captain Yonoi.

In “Merry Christmas on the Battlefield”, both Ken Ogata (Sergeant Hara) and Sakae Takita (Yonoi), who were originally supposed to appear, left the project, and Kenji Sawada was offered a new Yonoi role. However, Nagisa Oshima, who ended up breaking up due to conflicting schedules, was in the midst of a random search for performers…
She said that she suddenly remembered Beat Takeshi, whom she co-starred with on a TV program.

Mr. Oshima later played Yonoi with Kenji Sawada, Tomokazu Miura, Masaya Oki, and Kazuki Tomokawa, and Sergeant Hara with Tomisaburo Wakayama, Shintaro Katsu, Koji Ishizaka, and Bunta Sugawara. He made offers one after another to big actors such as this, but the story was not settled in any case, and the casting was difficult.

Meanwhile, Mr. Oshima came up with the idea that everyone should be amateurs,

In 1981, he suddenly remembered Beat Takeshi, whom he co-starred with on a television program for half a year, and in early 1982, he sent the script to Takeshi.

Beat Takeshi decides to appear

Then, Takeshi immediately told his manager to free up his schedule, but on the other hand, he was hesitant because he was not confident in his acting. During the interview, when I revealed that Mr. Oshima had an offer,

Mr. Kobayashi immediately said,

You should go out, you should go out

And it seems that the back was pushed,

Takeshi was encouraged by those words and decided to appear.

(Mr. Kobayashi seems to have been able to see through Takeshi’s acting talent for a long time, but not only that, but Mr. Oshima once asked him to become a director because he would produce it. In addition to having been put on, he appeared as an actor in Mr. Oshima’s movie “Broad daylight street demon”, and was familiar with Mr. Oshima’s movie style, so he was convinced that Mr. Takeshi’s appointment would succeed It seems to)

By the way, when Mr. Takeshi co-starred with Mr. Oshima on a TV program, when he told him that he was interested in movies, Mr. Oshima said,

When you go out, you have to be the main character, you can’t play a supporting role, you have to direct yourself.

It seems that I have been advised.

However, at the time, Takeshi was a hit with eight regular TV programs and one radio program, so it was difficult to adjust his schedule. , It seems that Takeshi’s turn had to be taken in 10 days,

It seems that people around him objected to the appointment of Takeshi, saying that it was impossible in this number of days, but Mr. Oshima declared that he would cut the shooting schedule himself and complete the shooting.

With this work, Takeshi began to be active in the movie world, and now he is called “the world’s Kitano”. Such Beat Takeshi looked back on this work when director Oshima passed away, “Ryuichi-san won an award overseas, and I also won an award for a movie. I think that was the trigger. Thank you.” .

I would be happy if you could refer to it even a little.
