Life of Abraham Lincoln

On February 12, 1809, future President Abraham Lincoln was born in a log cabin on the outskirts of Kentucky.

His family moved to Indiana when he was seven, but his mother died of an infectious disease when he was nine.

His father had no education, and Lincoln was born and raised in a poor family with minimal basic education.

But when he was ten years old, his father remarried, and this stepmother helped Lincoln learn to enjoy his studies.

His stepmother, whom he called “Mother”, taught him the virtues of reading, and Lincoln was influenced by the many books he read from his childhood.

The existence of this stepmother was the key to Lincoln becoming a lawyer, a politician, and then a president.

Lincoln began his political career at the age of 25.

He ran for Congress in Illinois as a Whig and was elected.

In parallel with his work, he also started his lawyer’s studies.

At the age of 27, he obtained his lawyer’s license, and while he was serving as a member of parliament, he also started working as a lawyer, and started a life with two straw sandals.

At the age of 37, he ran for the state House of Representatives and won.

After that, however, he moved away from his political center for a period of about ten years, concentrating on his work as a lawyer.

As a lawyer, Lincoln had a strong sense of justice and devoted himself to defending the poor, earning him the nickname “Abe the Honest.”

Lincoln was self-taught and eventually became president.

But his life has never been smooth.

At 26, he had a severe bout of depression, and at 31, he suffered from it again. There was a time when she was so driven to the point of contemplating suicide.
In addition, Lincoln had four sons during his lifetime, of which only his eldest son survived to adulthood.

Partly because of that, the couple’s relationship was not in a good state.

Road to President Abraham Lincoln

A turning point came for Lincoln when he was approaching the age of 50.

During the 1850s, when I was a lawyer, conflicts against the spread of slavery were increasing in the north and south of the United States.

Lincoln’s opinion at the time was

・Allows the maintenance of traditional slavery in the southern states
・But opposed to expansion to the north
・ Gradually bring slavery in the direction of abolition

That’s what it was.

However, the situation gradually became dominated by the expansionists of slavery.

Lincoln, who felt a sense of crisis about this, decided to return to politics, coupled with his strong sense of justice.

When he was 47 he joined the Republican Party, and at 49 he was nominated for a seat in the United States Senate, advocating the abolition of slavery expansion.

His campaign against pro-slavery Democrats made national headlines.

Although he missed the election in the election results at this time, Lincoln will be recognized by the people as an influential politician representing the Republican Party that criticizes the expansion of slavery.

At the age of 51, he won the presidential election by a large margin over the Democrats.

In 1861, at the age of 52, Lincoln became the 16th President of the United States.

Confederate forces attacked the northern forts, however, and the Civil War soon broke out.

At the beginning of the war, the northern part was outnumbered, but after that it gradually recovered.

Meanwhile, Lincoln was preparing a draft for the later proclamation of the Emancipation Proclamation.

On New Year’s Day 1863, he proclaimed the Emancipation Proclamation.

In November, at the Gettysburg National Cemetery Opening Ceremony, he delivered a famous speech with the phrase “Government of the People, by the People, for the People,” advocating the birth of a new American freedom and the basis of democracy. rice field.

Then, in December, he proclaimed a “proclamation of amnesty and rebuilding” against the rebel states of the South, marking the reunification of America.

In 1864, when the presidential election was held in the same year that the victory of the North was almost certain, he was re-elected with an overwhelming number of supporters.

In March of the following year, at the age of 56, he was inaugurated for a second term as president.

And just five days after the Civil War ended on April 9, Lincoln was shot at Ford’s Theater in Washington, D.C., and died the next day.

abraham lincoln quote

If your resolve is really firm, half of your hopes have already come true. Never forget that a strong determination to make your dreams come true is more important than anything else.

Those who are trying to improve themselves should not have time to fight. Moreover, when you think of the sullenness and loss of self-control that result from a fight, it becomes even more difficult to fight.

Decide that you can do it, that you will do it. Then find a way.

I would be happy if you could refer to it even a little.

Thank you for reading to the end.
