Shidax’s catering business is his vocation Kenichi Shida has risen from his baseball spirit to life
Despaired of not being able to play baseball, he contemplates suicide, but is persuaded by a passerby.
He started a cafeteria in his third year of high school. He does his best by sleeping only three to four hours a day, but the cafeteria goes bankrupt.
He set up a popsicle business at the age of 22, but his factory and his home were destroyed by fire. He is left with only a huge amount of debt.
He collects iron scraps and raises train fare to Tokyo. Mr. Tsutomu Shida, after that… Are you there!” he cried. However, he re-challenged his own starting point, the food service industry. Founded a company called “Sidax” after his own surname.
Biography of Kenichi Shida
Boyhood aiming for professional baseball
A kid general who runs around the fields like a monkey. He loves baseball and is a baseball boy. He started playing baseball when he was in the 6th grade of elementary school, and he was doing nothing but baseball. He entered Shizuoka Prefectural Nirayama High School, which is famous for baseball. Nirayama High School won Koshien the year before Shita entered school.
I listened to the championship game on the radio with excitement. The locals warmly welcomed the Nirayama High School team, which made a triumphant return to Nirayama. Shita congratulates the players while holding a lantern. He looked at the players with great admiration.
He entered high school and joined the baseball club without hesitation. During his freshman year, he spent his days picking up balls. At that time, he dreamed of becoming the best pitcher in Japan. His rigorous training didn’t bother him at all. And then, when he was in sophomore year, he turned out to be a regular pitcher. He had stamina and the ball was really fast. Around 140km/h.
However, the year he became a regular player, he suffered a severe pain in his right arm at a qualifying tournament in Shizuoka Prefecture, and was immediately rushed to the hospital with an emergency, and a cast was put on all the joints of his body. Doctors told him, “I have polyarthritis. I will never be able to hold a ball for the rest of my life.”
After getting on track as a businessman, he founded the Shidax baseball club in his company and assumed the position of general manager. From 2003 to 2005, his friend Katsuya Nomura (director of Yakult, Hanshin and Rakuten) took charge as GM and director, attracting attention. Even now, he is the chairman of the Japan Junior High School Baseball Federation, and is committed to the development of healthy youth through baseball.
Katsuya Nomura’s masterpiece book is a must-see!

Suicide due to shock of not being able to play baseball
Baseball was the only thing in my life I was really shocked. I can’t play that baseball anymore. I felt the hopelessness of my life. All of a sudden, her eyes turned white, and she thought that she would be better off dead. Then, one day, I naturally turned to that place and went to Atami’s Nishikigaura Beach, a famous spot for suicides.
“If you leave it like that, you might kill yourself!” A middle-aged man who manages the coastal park approached and said. And he listened to Shita’s story in various ways. He said, “Baseball isn’t the only thing in life.
After listening to him talk, I learned for the first time that “baseball isn’t the best in Japan, but business is also the best in Japan.” “Okay, let’s become a merchant. Let’s become the best merchant in Japan.”
Started challenging business
In the fall of his third year of high school, he took over the management of the popular restaurant “Ogotatsu” from a relative.
public dining room
I worked at the cafeteria while attending high school. The cafeteria is a popular cafeteria called “truck day and night cafeteria”. The store was thriving, and I worked hard. He could only sleep three or four hours a day.
However, the thriving cafeteria is forced to go out of business. A new bypass road opened and the trucks stopped stopping at the diner. Thus, the dining room became little more than an abandoned house left on the old road.
Through this experience, I learned that no matter how talented you are, no matter how hard you work, if the business environment changes, there will be things you can’t do anything about. Steady grasp of the trend of the times and seizing opportunities. I realized that it was important. Conversely, if you go against the times, success will be difficult no matter how hard you try. This setback became a valuable asset for Shita.
Popsicle business
Shita’s older brother runs a popsicle business. He followed suit and started a popsicle business in 1956 at the age of 22. Shortly after the war, sweets were scarce, and this popsicle sold like hot cakes. The raw materials were only water and syrup, and the cost rate was low. Therefore, the profit margin is large. This popsicle business has grown to the point where it is competing for first and second place in the eastern part of Shizuoka Prefecture.
Then, on April 13, 1958, in order to further expand the business, the company built the largest and most advanced ice cream factory in Shizuoka Prefecture, but disaster struck again. One year after the factory was completed, both the employee dormitory and home burned down. What’s more, I didn’t have fire insurance, so I was left with only the debt I borrowed when building the factory.
At this time, he despaired of repeated misfortunes, and stood dumbfounded, wondering, “How am I going to live from now on?” Rather than a vague sense of unease, it seems that he felt a sense of dread, “Am I being abandoned by fate?”
Restart from Tokyo
My hometown is already a land of disaster. At that time, there was no atmosphere to give another chance to a person who had failed in a business in a rural area.
Then he left his family and moved to Tokyo. I didn’t have money, so I went to the site of the burned factory and picked up iron scraps to pay for the train fare. Then he went to Shinjuku.
His impression when he arrived at Shinjuku Station was that “every day is a festival in Tokyo.” Anyway, there are many people. At that time, he said, “Every day is a festival, so there are plenty of people. If I could earn even 10 yen from each person in this crowd, it would add up to 1,000,000 yen or 10,000,000 yen.” I thought. “I have no choice but to do business in Tokyo. To become the best merchant in Japan, there is only Tokyo.” so determined
There was only one acquaintance in Tokyo. His wife’s father knew Mr. Fujita. Therefore, he repeatedly asked Mr. Fujita, “I want you to pass the work.” I thought that there was no work other than “the world of food”. I visited Mr. Fujita’s house 12 or 3 times, and at the last visit, he said, “Shita-kun, I lost to you.
Lunch service business
I have come to believe that the catering business is my vocation. If you can feel that nurturing this business carefully and doing your best is your irreplaceable life, and you can feel that your job is your vocation, that is really strong. Also, when I think that my job is my vocation, I feel a kind of sense of mission.
When I went to America. I participated in a business tour to observe food service in the United States, and when I went to Chicago on that tour, I met the vice president of a catering service company called Big Food.
At that time, I was taught the social importance of the school lunch business. “The job of food service is a very important job, managing the health of employees and playing a part in the production of the company.”
This is a book for learning business management by Tsutomu Shida. “Now you can see the path from entrepreneurship to success!”
(1) “Will”; “A strong feeling that I will definitely become like this”. When starting a business, you will face many challenges. If you have the will, you can overcome such difficulties.
(2) “Planning ability”; determine the path to reach that aspiration. If you envision yourself 10 years from now, you have to decide what you will do in 5 years and what you will do in 1 year. With such a plan, you can live a life without waste.
③ “Achievement”; I will do anything. that concentration. This is important. “Matakumen no Ima” is the ability to concentrate on one point when shooting an arrow with a bow. Shake off distractions and focus on one thing. Entrepreneurs need that kind of focus.
