“Tatsumi”, a popular dining room with set meals, opened in 1973, and has been in business for 27 years and 4 months since July 27, 1974 without taking a single day off. With over 10,000 consecutive days of business, this famous restaurant is one of Hakodate’s “Three Great Dekamori Shokudo”.
At the foot of Mt. Hakodate, there is a set meal restaurant “Tatsumi” in a corner of a residential area in the “western district”. Once you pass through the noren curtain, you will find yourself in the Showa-era popular dining room itself. A total of 20 seats with a small rise and a counter. A TV, a shelf of comic books, and the smell of oil… The 20-seat shop is almost full with regular customers.
We offer cheap and delicious seafood rice bowls, set meals and ramen to tourists and local customers. Our store is popular for its cheapness, deliciousness, and volume.

At the age of 30, Mr. Yamada trained at a soba restaurant in Tokyo to open his own restaurant, and in 1973 he opened the ramen restaurant “Tatsumi.” After opening the restaurant, through repeated trial and error, we increased the number of set meal menus such as fried chicken and ginger grill.
Mr. Yamada, the owner of the shop, said, “Looking back, things flew by in a blink of an eye. I was able to do this thanks to the support of my employees and my family.”
“welcome!”-. When you pass through the noren curtain, you can hear Mr. Yamada’s energetic voice in the restaurant, which has the atmosphere of a set meal restaurant with a Showa era atmosphere.
Opened in 1973. The hearty menu and the friendly and cheerful service of the owner have made many fans, including students and local residents, as well as tourists.
Open 27 years ago. When Mr. Yamada hurt his back and closed the store for about half a year, he decided to make it a “store where customers can be welcomed whenever they come.” After reopening, we continue to operate without taking a day off.
Mr. Yamada says, “I can stay healthy without getting sick because I eat well. I want my customers to eat a lot and stay healthy.”

Public cafeteria “Tatsumi” and power outage due to the Eastern Iburi Earthquake
In the early hours of September 6, 2018, an earthquake with a seismic intensity of upper 6 occurred in the Iburi region of central Hokkaido, and Hakodate observed shaking with a seismic intensity of lower 5. The power outage in Hakodate city was resolved on the 7th, but I wondered if the power outage due to the earthquake interrupted our record of continuous open hours…
However, we continue to operate with candles!
The public dining room “Tatsumi” is a blackout nemomakezu. It seems that it was open as usual until sunset on Thursday, the 6th, the day of the earthquake. It was said that there were more customers than usual.
Popular restaurant “Tatsumi” and the new coronavirus
We achieved 10,000 days on December 12, 2021, but the new coronavirus occurred in 2020, but due to requests from regulars that it was difficult to visit the store due to the influence of the new coronavirus, we decided to change the set meal and rice bowl menu. We started taking away.
Masakatsu Yamada, the owner of the restaurant, says, “I want people to eat cheap, delicious, and hearty set meals and bowls at home,” offering 20 different menus, including fried and grilled fish, and comes with a generous 350 grams of rice.
The best-selling items are the fried chicken set meal (640 yen) and ginger grilled set meal (same), and rice bowls such as katsudon (600 yen) and oyakodon (same as above) are also popular.
Injuries from years of hard work
In the fall of 2021, he was hospitalized for about three weeks with a stress fracture. “My body won’t listen to me…” she frowns, but her voice is firm. Taeko Mizushima (65), an employee who lives in the neighborhood, supported her shop while Ms. Yamada was away. She’s been running the store for over 20 years, and she’s two people. It’s a regular sight to see them joking with each other.
Yamada’s injured back had not completely healed, but she endured the pain as she stood in the kitchen with her three daughters and her staff. did.
wedding of four daughters
I don’t miss the weddings of my four daughters.
After working for a while, leaving for the wedding, and then going back to work, the daughters think that it would be nice to take time off for the wedding, but the business will not be closed.
At the end of each day’s business, Mr. Yamada would thank you, saying, “Today ended without incident. Thank you very much.”
Mr. Yamada, who turned 81, said that she plans to have one regular day off a week in consideration of her physical condition.

It is popular not only with locals but also with tourists.
Feel free to put it in, it’s cheap, the volume is plentiful, and the satisfaction is excellent.
The specialty is the “Jumbo chicken set meal (with rice, miso soup, and a side dish. 1,300 yen).” A whole chicken from Hokkaido is deep-fried. After waiting for a while, I was surprised at the sight when it was brought to the table. It’s so wild, and despite its size, it’s well-seasoned, crispy on the outside and very juicy on the inside. The secret to its popularity is that it has a light salty taste that stimulates your appetite and you can eat it quickly.
I would be happy if you could refer to it even a little.
Thank you for reading to the end.
