After graduating from college, his parents told him to take over the furniture business.
After graduating, he worked as an office worker in the military and sold furniture for the family business, but in the 1960s he decided to start his own business. The first few businesses had a series of successes and failures, but the turning point was when he started his own hotel refurbishment business, purchased the Capitol Park Hotel in Sacramento, and opened a showroom in Levi. You leased space by chance.
He bought a few Levi’s jeans for himself, and after unsuccessfully trying to return jeans that didn’t fit, he realized most department stores only had a few sizes. He also realizes the inconvenience that Levi’s jeans have few sizes and few items that can be exchanged.
This experience became the starting point for Donald Fisher to start a fashion brand, and he opened the first GAP store in 1969 at the age of 41.
“GAP” meaning and success
Fisher and his wife opened the first store with jeans of all sizes, naming it ‘GAP’ after the ‘generation gap’. The store was targeted at ages 12-25 and sold Levi’s jeans and records and tapes. However, when it first opened, it was a store that handled a large number of Levi’s jeans, so the image of GAP as a store that sells Levi’s was pervasive at first. Also, since it was a fashion store that I started as an amateur, I could not select and propose good items on my own, and in the end, I could only increase sales by selling low prices.
In 1972, Fishers launched the Gap label, becoming the first chain in retail history to use its store name as a brand name.
“GAP” was a resounding success, and Fisher remained CEO until 1995, Chairman of the Board until 2004, and served as the company’s Director and Chairman Emeritus until his death.

Mr. Fischer, who ran a real estate development business until he founded GAP at the age of 41, has been highly praised for his marketing strategies that have improved the fashionability of casual clothing and proposed new lifestyles.
