What is the synopsis of [Favre Insect Chronicles]? Is it a picture book? gift of dreams

It was so funny when I was a kid and I still remember reading it in the school library. Among them, the one that still remains in my memory is the chapter where I observed the dung beetle. It is an insect that does not exist in Japan, and I remember being surprised by its ecology and reading it over and over again. I remember being so excited to see a dung beetle roll an animal’s droppings upside down. This time, I would like to introduce Henri Fabre’s Fabre Insects, a great introduction to the ecology of insects! It’s quite a masterpiece because it boasts a volume of nearly 10 paperbacks!

Who is Fabre in Fabre Insect Chronicles?

Pioneer of insect behavior research

Jean-Henri Fabre (1823-1915) was born in a mountain village in southern France.
Although his life was poor, Fabre studied hard.

Fabre was very curious, and from a young age he always questioned everything. He conducts experiments on his own for things that interest him, and learns the importance of confirming things by experimenting on his own.

At night, in order to ascertain the identity of the gurgling noises outside, he slipped out of the house and approached the bushes, grasping the nature of the noises with his hands and carefully observing them.

Fabre grew up repeatedly in the great outdoors with many encounters and discoveries.

In 1842, Fabre graduated from school and became an elementary school teacher at the age of 18.

Fabre’s full-time French teacher and official civil servant. He also had a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and physics and a doctorate in natural history.

He was not only a school teacher, but also a textbook author and poet.

While working as a civil servant at elementary and junior high schools, Fabre was fascinated by familiar insects and conducted ecological observations.

He continued to observe the ecology of insects, and in 1878, at the age of 54, the first volume of Fabre Insects was born. He was over 80 years old when he wrote the 10th volume over 30 years.

At the time of his publication, it was not well received by experts, and Fabre suffered many difficulties during his lifetime. Despite his poor income, he was nominated for a Nobel Prize.

The feature of [Favre Insects] is the fun of thinking and practicing your own method to know “the meaning of insect behavior”.

Of course, the ecology of insects itself is interesting and fun to read, but it’s also a book that teaches you how to solve your own questions using familiar topics.

Synopsis of Fabre Insect Chronicles

Insects are extremely diverse creatures in terms of species, ecology, and numbers, and they behave in ways that humans cannot even imagine. While learning a wealth of specific examples from the behavior of these insects, Fabre thought and drew [Favre Insects].

The feature of [Favre Insects] is the fun of thinking and practicing your own method to know “the meaning of insect behavior”.

Of course, the ecology of insects itself is interesting and fun to read, but it’s also a book that teaches you how to solve your own questions using familiar topics.

Fabre Insect Chronicles is child-friendly!

[Favre Insects] is also a work that has been translated by many people.
[Favre Insects] has been made into a work not only in books but also in manga.

The reason why [Favre Insects] is easy for children to read is probably that it is not in a formal dissertation format.

In [Favre Insect Chronicles], it seems as if you are reading about the ecology of insects, and the reader feels like they are trying to become Fabre and trying to solve the mystery.

In addition, by anthropomorphizing insects, ecology such as mating, parenting, and predation is made easy to understand, and even if you read it, you will not get the impression that it is a difficult “scientific book” at all.

The protagonist is, of course, an insect, but in fact, Fabre is structured like a detective novel in which Fabre unravels the mystery of “bug.”

First make a hypothesis.
What conditions would you put a bug on to prove it?
Readers will be drawn more and more into the observations that are recommended through trial and error.

No wonder, Fabre has a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and physics, and is also a professor of physics.

Some of the stories in the whole volume are excerpted and recorded.

The story of my daughter’s favorite “ant” and “Tuchisugari” are also included. (And of course, the story of the Scarab beetle!)
It is divided into upper and lower volumes, and the volume is also affordable.

The translation is also easy to read, so I recommend it.

I want to conquer all volumes! For those who say, there is a complete translation of Fabre Insects in 10 volumes, which was translated by Mr. Daisaburo Okumoto.

Even though there are 10 volumes in total, each volume has two volumes, top and bottom, so there will be a total of 20 volumes!

lastly

“What you like is what you do well.”

[Favre Insects] is a recommended book for elementary and junior high school students. You can learn not only the knowledge of insects but also the methodology of “zoological behavior” to observe animals.

Of course, even adults can enjoy reading it, so please read it.

I would be happy if you could refer to it even a little.

Thank you for reading to the end.
