Is Yamagata’s “Jellyfish Aquarium” the Best in the World?

“Tsuruoka City Kamo Aquarium” is located in Tsuruoka City along the coast of Yamagata Prefecture. It is built on the coast with an excellent view overlooking the Sea of Japan.

In 1930, it opened as “Yamagata Prefecture Aquarium”, and in 1961, it was relocated and opened as “Tsuruoka City Kamo Aquarium”. When it was relocated in the 1960s, it was a popular spot with more than 200,000 visitors every year, but as more and more large-scale aquariums opened in the surrounding area, the number of visitors gradually declined. It has dwindled to 90,000 people.

1997 was the year when the lowest annual number of visitors was recorded. A keeper who was preparing for a coral exhibition found a baby upside-down jellyfish in a tank.

Kuranetarium “Jellyfish Dream Hall”

The main attraction of Kamo Aquarium is the Kuranetarium, which exhibits about 60 species of precious jellyfish from around the world.

Jellyfish Dream Theater is 10,000 jellyfish dancing!

You can see a variety of jellyfish, such as the red jellyfish, which has tentacles that are more than two meters long, the beetle jellyfish, which shines by reflecting light, and the octopus jellyfish, which has small polka dots on its umbrella.

One of the most popular exhibits in the Kuranetarium is the giant circular fish tank “Jellyfish Dream Theater”. About 10,000 moon jellyfish swim leisurely in the 5-meter-diameter tank, creating a fantastic world view.

The lights are dimmed in the room and the aquarium is lit up. The jellyfish illuminated by the light is so mysterious that you can’t help but stare at it. For those who want to take their time, sit in the tiered viewing space in front of the aquarium and enjoy the beautiful scenery to your heart’s content.
